A downloadable game for Windows and Linux

This is a short VN type game made for the Quarantine Game Jam. The game was made with love2d, and boy did we put lots of love into it. Due to certain circumstances we wound up changing the goals and nature of our game from puzzle shooter to vn, and we struggled at the end to get enough content into the game. We both worked really really hard, and I'm really proud of our work in such a short amout of time, going from nothing to this.

Basically, only 2 of the 6 characters have legitimate fully fleshed out routes, there is one test route that the other 4 characters use. Sorry. We hope to update the game soon with music and full routes for all characters. Other than that, it's essentially complete.

All art was done by emil (emaware on itch)

All codes were done by bulb (g4stly on itch)

Download

Download
homesick.tar.gz 9 MB
Download
homesick_win.zip 5 MB

Install instructions

For windows: download zip, run executable

For Linuz: unarchive, run the `love` executable

Both downloads include `.love` files, which are just renamed .zip files, which contain the source and assets for the game. All binaries distributed are open source www.love2d.org and all code written by me is distrubuted via the .love files.

I quite like this, it was short and sweet. A little too short, but I love the world building, dialogue and art. Really wish there was more than just three people/interactions! I'd love to be able to explore the cult space a lot more.

And why is Terrif a purple sheep floating next to me?! I WANT TO KNOW SO MUCH!

I think for the dialogue, you need each character to have their own colour. And the main character's name is always on the left when they're talking, and other characters on the right. That way, you always know who's saying what.

Would be nice if the characters animated a bit when speaking a bit.

I couldn't spend much time with the game as I wanted but it seems the items you pack at the start don't change the dialogue or ending much? If not, that would be a shame. You trade and that's it.

I'm not sure why, but I played it twice and I had two best friends called Erika twice? Even though they had different sprites? I'm sure what happened there.

Overall, really cool ideas and great job creating  a world I want to know more about! Hope to see you in more game jams! :D

I'm sorry we were unable to complete the game ;_;

The items you pack initially are actually irrelevant. Each character has an ideal trade, and the items you receive in return are items that were not selected at the beginning. Points and extra dialogue are unlocked by performing ideal trades. The "good route" for each character would have been the genuine route, even if it was uncomfortable. During that route a hint would be dropped to which item they would have liked most. We wanted to reward the player for empathetic and genuine responses.

At the very least, this was our intention, I cannot remember how much of this we completed, only that we were unable to complete more than 2 characters.

I appreciate your comments, especially the one about different characters having different colored text.

One of the erika's was left over from development, we did not finish :T

I like this! I enjoyed the setting and story, and the characters interactions are quite interesting. I wish I had more information on the objects I selected in the beginning, or had more cues during conversations as to who would like what. It felt pretty random (unless that was the point?). Overall, good stuff!

there is an error for windows. its missing a .dll file and it wont let me play it.
